Rare Books vs Hard-To-Find Books

nd-scribed Byzantine tomes are rare. Gutenberg Press books are rare. Self-published Victorian tomes are rare," I thought. I was confident that I knew what a rare book was when we started our bookshop deep in the country, quite near where Schrijver penetrated the mountains for the first time.

Then Mr Besant (not his real name) came asking for a book called A Colossus of Roads by Pat Storrar and Gьnther Komnick. It was published in 1984 by Murray & Roberts, a South African construction firm, and concrete firm Concor. The subject of the book is the road passes built through the Great Rift Mountains swathing the eastern and southern sections of the country by one intrepid visionary called Thomas Charles John Bain (1830-1893). His road works still exist in all their daring glory. His endeavours resonate strongly with the travels of Bergh and Schrijver. Whereas the earlier travelers clambered over mountains to explore the interior, Thomas Bain built lasting thoroughfares through mountain passes hacked into the mountainsides, living in remote areas to complete his work.

Mr Besant had been searching for this book for a long time. I assured him that it would not be difficult to find. I would put out the word to the SA Bookdealers Association (SABDA) members and search through the aBillionbooks booksites, I told him to keep his mobile switched on. It would take no more than an hour to locate, I said.
I believed that sincerely. My parents were friends with Pat Storrar. I own a signed copy of The Colossus of Roads. How hard could it be to find?

Well, five months later I called Mr Besant's mobile with the good news that I had finally located a copy.
"I thought you said it wouldn't take long," he complained.
"Well, it is a hard-to-find book," I said firmly.
Why didn't I call it a rare book? Something told me it would be sacrilege to place this book, as interesting as it is, alongside books as special and rare as the rare piece of Africana in Mr Wills's shop.

Some semantic significance is attached to word "rare" for us all. "Hard-to-find" apparently means a more recent book that was under-published in error or so popular that no one wants to place their copies in the secondhand market. "Rare" apparently means a book over a hundred years old for which one feels an intuitive veneration.

The difference is spurious, really, now that online bookstores are bringing elusive and obscure books within reach of everyone. Now as a matter of principle I mix the two terms freely and use them interchangeably. True, it is hard to find a rare book. But wouldn't you expect it to be? And hard-to-find books are rare books, even on the internet. That's why they are hard-to-find.

Rather than creating a business plan that achieves no results, other than to gather dust, you should be writing a strategic and operational plan. The words 'strategic' and 'operational' are important as they give purpose and results to the plan. Your annual plan needs to be strategic so that you know where you are going and what you would like to achieve from your business or division. The plan needs to be operational so that it will tell you how to get there. It will determine the strategies and goals that need to be achieved to reach your end point.

Strategic business planning is about deciding on the future you want for your business or division and then deciding how you intend to obtain that future. If you have been in business for a number of years and your results each year are much the same as the year before then obviously something will have to change if you would like to see an improvement. It comes down to the saying: If you keep on doing what you have always done you will get what you have always got.

The steps we outline below are perhaps unconventional to people familiar with business planning, but then most business plans don't deliver results. All too often business plans are created out of a corporate requirement rather than a focused result. This system of business planning has been proved to deliver results for over 20 years. Try something new and you may be surprised by the outcome.

To achieve results it is important that each step is well thought out and no step is omitted. Equally important is that the steps are completed in an open and collaborative environment that encourages learning and new ideas.

Step 1 – Vision and Mission Statements

Businesses and divisions tend to ignore the importance of their vision and mission statements. These statements should tell you where you are going and why you are in business. If you don't know why you are in business and why someone would buy from you, then your clients and customers will not know either and will go to your competition.

A vision statement should paint a picture of the business you would like. It should get you thinking about your business and dreaming about what is possible. You can't exaggerate your vision so go wild and have large dreams. You won't know where it will take you unless you give free reign to those ideas and get excited.

A vision statement can contain what you would like to see in revenue in a number of years. You could want to become a "world leader" in something, or become a "specialist" in something else. What would you like out of your company? Let it be more specific than flowery language that sits in your entrance foyer.

A mission statement should answer the question as to why your business or division exists. Why would someone buy your product or service? What makes you different from your competition? Step 2 – Celebrate Successes

We tend to be quick to criticize, slow to praise. But by recognizing your successes, you increase your confidence to move on to make new things happen. What we have failed to accomplish always stands out in our minds, but our successes are where the opportunities lie.

Take some time to think about what you achieved in the last year. Whether it was reaching a goal you had set or handling a crisis that arose. A thank you from a client indicates a success as does appreciation from your staff. Make a list of all the successes you achieved and find ways that you can expand on those achievements.

Step 3 – Learn from Failures

It is also important to examine where we missed the mark and then identify what didn't work. If you do not analyze your failures they will probably occur again as you do not give yourself the opportunity to learn from them. You are your own best teacher, the best source of your own wisdom. We never really need advice and hate it when we get it because we hate being told what we know already.

Make a list of your failures and mistakes and for each examine why it failed and how you can prevent the failure in the future. What needs to be changed? What needs to be put in place? What is missing?

By examining both what worked and what didn't work, you can find the lessons that you need to learn. You can then identify opportunities and the way forward.

Step 4 – A New Paradigm

Using steps 2 and 3 to analyze where you succeeded and where you failed you will then be able to discover if there are any common factors that cause you to succeed or fail. You might find that your failures are all in a specific situation or there is some other common factor. This will tell you how you limit yourself by what you assume to be true. Everyone has assumptions about their truth and these assumptions are usually not true but only serve to limit your true potential.

Complete the following sentence … "I'd love to ____, but I can't because I'm/we're _____. What are the words in the second blank? This is an example of a limiting assumption. The second blank need not be about you but could be about your market, your clients, your competitors etc. To move forward and achieve your vision these limiting assumptions need to be changed, you need to take responsibility for where you are.

Change your limiting assumptions to empowering perceptions. Find a way around the external factors you feel are limiting your business or division. There are no "cant's", only new alternatives and new possibilities. Create a new paradigm.

If you really are not able to get around a "can't" then you need to examine how important this factor is to your business and therefore whether you are in the right business.

Step 5 - Values

By understanding your values you will understand what motivates you. Your company and business goals need to reflect personal goals as well. If not this misalignment will cause discontent and poor performance as staff will not align with the goals. You will only be able to achieve your goals successfully if they are supported by your values. Think about what motivates you, what gets you out of bed in the morning. Make a list of the values you cherish or wish to abide by. Prioritize them. Be clear about what makes you feel good about yourself. What value does that represent?

If your business supports your values, such as honesty and integrity, it has a greater chance of success than one that requires you be dishonest on a daily basis.

Step 6 – Strategies to Success

Strategies define how you plan to grow your business and achieve your vision over time. They are critical to setting direction and keeping your business on track. Strategies are often industry specific and if you follow the core strategies of your industry your business will have a greater chance of success.

Create your strategies based on opportunities and threats that your business faces. Think about what is critical to growing and operating your business and achieving your vision.

Remember that you can't be all things to all people and you should therefore specialize in what you do. Strategies can include topics such as technical knowledge, reputation, visibility, quality, employees and service.

Goals can be formulated for each area of your business such as financial, marketing and sales, human resources, operations etc. Ensure that meeting these goals will achieve your vision and mission.

As goals are measurable they can be graphed and also broken down in to weekly or monthly goals. If you are trying to increase sales over a one year period take the amount that you trying to increase it by and make smaller goals to achieve on a weekly or monthly basis. The good thing about graphing them is watching them go up!

Picture yourself in nature and so long ago that nothing that looks like *man* as we know it has made its mark. Even you aren't quite sure just how smart you are! Compared to the predators that hunt you, you suspect you're even a little slow on the uptake. Your kind has not even developed the language to talk about the experience. You are one of the aboriginals, the first people, and you are of this land, indigenous to it.

Learning — because your elders don't quite have the words — is based on observation. You live by your senses and your relationship with the moment. Sure, you think about things, but not much. The moment is much too important to your survival, and the more you think, the less time you have to act. In this world, action is survival.

"This is so out of step," you may say, "With what life is about now."

Okay, test something out. Go in to a forest or wilderness area far away from home and the road, to a place you've never been. Do it on a moonless night, alone, and do it without having anything but the clothes on your back. Walk deeper into the woods. You will will get in touch with an important part of who you are as a human being – the same core that lived inside your distant Grandparents lives inside you today.

You will immediately switch into a reliance on what you feel rather than what you know. You will take in cues from your external and internal environments and respond to them. As soon as the moment comes that you experience a feeling of "rightness" in your chest, you will take the action that that feeling dictates.

you "follow your gut," you are responding to a feeling of knowingness having little to do with the analysis of a preponderance of information. When you are "tuned-in" to the moment, you are gathering in impressions and then allowing them to coalesce into a choice. Where do you literally "feel" this sensation of rightness? From what place do you move? Somewhere a lot closer to your heart than your head.

The reliance on information over sensation for survival is a relatively new development in our species. Even living within the "idea" that we are separate from our environment (as opposed to the experience of "being" an integral part of it and not perceiving a separation) is a "culture" that even today exists in only a relatively small part of the world.

Every person who relies on nature for his or her survival moves from a sensation-based (a heart-centered) way of being first. This is not to minimize the importance of the brain, it is meant to offer you perspective. You, who are reading this, are simply part of a culture that has forgotten how to do this.

If you have any doubts, take a look at the remaining indigenous cultures, like Lakota, Maori, or Inuit among others. They are the remnants of what had once been an unbroken line of a heart-centered way of being. Certain differences between them and us are evident, including their relationship with the environment, non-reliance on verbal communication, cosmologies that are nature-, rather than personality-based, a certain lack of guile, cultures of sharing, and perhaps most telling of all, relationship with time.

Our ancestors did not have enough information to know just how much the brain does. Somewhere within, they knew where the decisions were made. Our ancestors only knew what felt right.

The implications of this to our lives today have nothing to do with either/or. Clearly each way of being has its merits. The species has survived. The brain and heart are meant to work in unison. They come from the same source. They are complementary. They need each other.

What I'm doing this minute is working with your brain to help you gain access to your heart-consciousness. Once there, you will learn that localized consciousness is able to access and utilize the thinking power of the brain. The challenge of today is to more consciously move from one to the other and use the result for the benefit of all.

What we are learning today, and what this series is about is that, #1) There is a difference between the consciousness of the heart and the consciousness of the brain, #2) They are able to work in intimate communication, and #3) We can choose which state of consciousness will take the lead at any one time.

It has been a natural part of evolution that our brains took the reins for a while. How else could we get to learn so much about ourselves from a nuts and bolts perspective? Ironically, the use of our brains has brought us the "facts" that tell us it is not alone when it comes to being a center of consciousness.

The next installment will examine the role of relationship in heart-consciousness.

Throughout the world there must be millions of weekend golfers who play the game they love just once in their hectic and sometimes very tiring week, hoping to find out the secret of this magical but really frustrating pastime. Golf clubs! Now there’s a subject I guarantee always comes up on a round of golf. If not on the course, then certainly in the clubhouse afterwards, where we are celebrating perhaps one good shot in a round or drowning our sorrows in a beer glass for yet another waste of a good morning.

Let’s examine the clubs further. Firstly, we usually have two or three woods in the 14 permitted clubs we are allowed to carry in the bag (what a strange number). A driver is the biggest of them all - both in head size and club length - and, in theory at least, if used correctly, can and should hit the ball the longes

t distance. Why oh why can’t I hit the ball like that nice Mr Woods just once in my lifetime. Granted he is more talented than I and he practises about 18 hours a day, but it still would be nice just once to hear that crisp click of the ball leaving the club heading in the right direction.

All higher numbered clubs are supposed to do about the same thing, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 irons are also supposed to be hit huge distances yet no matter how often I have had lessons, I can’t seem to make a shot from a three iron travel any further than a shot from a five iron.

See what I’m saying about being frustrated! Next, the 6 and 7 irons - or mid irons are used if you are lucky enough to hit a half reasonable shot with a long iron, leaving the ball just a bit too far for an 8 or 9 iron (which are used for play closer to the green) you can then hit the mid-iron in the hope that you will reach the green and give yourself a reasonable chance of sinking a putt.

The sand wedge and pitching wedge are used around the green for particularly close shots that don’t quite land on the green or finish up in the sand of a bunker. And finally, while on the smoother surface of the green, you get to use the putter. You have probably seen these implements in all shapes and sizes. Like broomsticks, extra pieces stuck on the handle and all sorts of different club heads.

Let’s see what the generalisation is then: all iron clubs vary in degree of angle. If you imagine the one iron as being almost straight, the 2, 3, 4, etc, all have increasing angle on the club head to give you more lift when you hit the ball. Therefore, the sand iron and the pitching wedge would have the greatest angle, thus giving you the most lift from the ground.

If I sound like a text book, I am sorry. I have tried for almost 15 years to find out the secret of which club to use for which shot but I still generally finish up using a five-iron for pretty well everything.

You must get out and talk to people. The term “networking” doesn’t just refer to allowing computers to talk to each other it also refers to people talking to each other. In your case, you’ve got to get out and meet people. Check the business section of your local newspaper. There will be dozens of networking meetings listed in there. It doesn’t matter that you aren’t in the field yet go to these meetings and meet people. Initiative is never a bad thing.

And once you get that first job, make it count. Show up on time and do what you say you’ll do. If you don’t know something, dig into Google and find the answer or ask a more knowledgeable colleague. (Just doing these few basic things will put you way ahead of the pack.)

Getting started in IT is as tough as breaking into any other field. What’s In A (TLD) Name?

They’re pushing for a top level domain (TLD) exclusively for porn sites. I'm quoting from this article at http://www.babnet.net/en_detail.asp?id=1224: "There is also concern that the existance of .xxx will lead to legislation making its use mandatory for sexually explicit material, leading to legal conflicts over the definition of “sexually explicit”, free speech rights, and jurisdiction."

That's like saying that the Louisville Slugger company in Kentucky shouldn't make bats anymore because they can be used as weapons. Just because something can be dangerous when placed in the hands of one intent on doing harm, doesn't mean that it shouldn't exist. And to tell you the truth, the adult industry and the government are already - and always - at loggerheads with each other when it comes to the First Amendment.

Let me start off by saying I agree with the article in this respect: the existence of an .xxx TLD would be a God-

But the reason “.xxx” is not for me has nothing to do with the above-mentioned quote. Not that everyone thinks along the same lines that I do, but, according to the article, in order to use the .xxx TLD, you'd have to download certain internet explorer plugins; plugins that are categorized as spyware and adware. Spyware and adware? No thanks. Lord knows how many hours I’ve spent trying to rid my computer of popup-inducing software and applications.

And $60 to register a domain (I hear that in the UK that it'll cost about 40 pounds)? Unless you as a webmaster are trying to cover all your bases (e.g. you currently own mypornsite.com, my-porn-site.com, mypornsite.net, etc, and would like to own mypornsite.xxx), why bother paying that much? If you're not purchasing a popular, high-traffic domain directly from another webmaster, any decent domain can be had for less than $20.

Moreover, ".com" is so entrenched in the layman's mind, no other TLD comes even close to its popularity. I find that people don't remember your website URL as well if it doesn't end in a .com. I think that's why, with all the television programming out there, .tv is not such a household name as far as TLDs go.

And, not to spread rumors or anything (so remember, you didn't hear it from me :-)), I don't think that the .nets, the .bizs, and the .infos of the world do as well in the search engines. However, the .orgs and the .govs, where the search term is appropriate, seem to have no problems ranking well in SERPs (search engine results pages). That's just my personal and un-scientific opinion.

Go on and try it: search for popular and generic words on your favorite search engine, and see how many listings come up .tv, .net, .biz, or .info. Or maybe it's the old "chicken and the egg" puzzle; maybe there are no results to be had because many prospective webmasters fear registering those less popular TLDs in the first place.

Developing the next generation of public servants takes a public commitment. Instilling in young people that public service is of prime importance is critical to the continuance of a democracy. Without their support who will be the future taxpayers, lawmakers or public servants?

Where will future government staff facilitators come from so that future elected policy makers, overwhelmed by the vastness of their responsibilities and armed with only limited resources, can rely on honest and wise policy options suggest by those facilitators? Do young people join the police force or fire department out of a sense of the merits of public service or because of the good pay and benefits? Where is the training ground for the next generation of State and local government researches and staff?

After democracy was threatened by WW I and WW II the public spirit of serving the country ran high. Voting and participation in government was a way of life. Now, only periodically do young people take the opportunity to vote and almost ignore their government.

Every State Legislature, State University and State Executive department needs to develop institutions to engage young people in their democratic form of government. For every government internship that now exists ten more must be established. Young people need to have instilled in them that serving their fellow man as a public servant is a noble and challenging career. Public schools need to motivate their students by highlighting the achievements of public servants so that their students are primed to go forth and serve. Their is no missionary zeal among any organized group for Democracy as an institution. History is taught today without a sense of democracy as an institution. As a society do we want to end up with policy “wonks” only interested in their own advancement? Will that advancement come from putting the “right” spin on a bad idea or from working hard on the details and development of a policy objective so that no spin is required? If we want to succeed as a democracy young people must learn to become statesmen and stateswomen and do what is right for the people whether the people know it at the time or not.

How does democracy survive if young people do not know how it works? Once young people are taught how a democracy works and can achieve a financial stake in it they will respond in a way that is in their own self enlightened interest. We are teaching our young people to say no to drugs, now we need to teach them to say no to apathy for their democratic form of government.

It is one thing to teach young people the facts and rudiments of a democratic form of government; it is quiet another thing to instruct them as to how to make that government responsive to their needs. What means and methods should be used to educate the next generation of public servants? What training and background will those public servants have to help address the demands put on elected officials?

The brokerage houses are doing this to capture their interest and loyalty. Do young people understand how to act as a vendor to sell goods to a local or State government? What is their understanding of how the selection of a vendor will be made? Are all procurement by governments thought by young people to be given out based on party affiliation or past contributions to a political party?

So, if you are a State or Local Government leader hire an intern! If you are an educator figure out a way to involve young people in the service of their community and State through an expanded curriculum or class focus. Do it today.

German students were keenly watching the evening phenomenon over the Jaffna Lagoon.

The new development in having a direct rapport between two points of the frontiers of the warring factions was a credit to the Ceasefire Agreement between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government, which was facilitated by Norway with the backing of the international community.

There were times they used to infiltrate into opposite areas and inflicted heavy casualties and losses.

We had come near the barrier of the LTTE's exit point, but had to wait as we were still not given clearance to enter into the Army's front.

Alcatraz is an old prison, which was used as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963, a total of 29 years. It is located in the middle of San Francisco Bay in California and when it was opened to the public from 1972, it has become a very famous historic and tourist site. The National Park Service, as a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, now maintains the abandoned prison.

Alcatraz Island was also the first long-term Army prison. During the 1800s, Civil War and Spanish American War Prisoners were the first inmates to arrive on the Island. Later on, due to its isolated location and the freezing San Franc

isco Bay waters, the authorities considered Alcatraz as an ideal place for holding dangerous prisoners.

Initially, Alcatraz was just another Federal institution but the prison started gaining fame after it began housing notorious criminals like George “”Machine Gun”" Kelly, Robert Franklin Stroud, Alvin Karpis, Henry Young and Al Capone. Criminals who could not be controlled by other Federal institutions were also incarcerated here.

The average number of inmates in Alcazar was around 260 and approximately 1545 total men imprisoned here during the 29 years of its operation. There were escape attempts but there is no official record if any of them had been successful. A few prisoners disappeared but were all presumed drowned in the San Francisco Bay waters.

After the prison was closed down in 1963, some Native Indians from 1969 to 1971 occupied it. Alcatraz is now a National Historic Landmark, opened to tours. SLOOH is a robotic observatory on the Canary Islands. Every Monday, whenever conditions permit viewing, you can participate in mulitple SLOOH “missions” over the course of an hour-long session.

What does SLOOH stand for? Apparently it’s about putting the OOH into SLEW!

SLOOH currently uses several 3-megapixel CCD cameras and four telescopes (in two domes):

a 14-inch diameter Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope (focal length 2160mm) high magnification scope and and Wide Field Lens System with a focal length of 135mm at f/5.6 in Dome 1

at at-home tip: Watch for local supermarket sales! Sales are great for getting high quality meat at a lower price, and the meat can always be frozen for later jerky making! Lean ground beef makes great jerky, and can be shaped with cookie cutters for fun jerky!

Flank steaks are one of the best buys – it's all lean red meat that's easy to prepare because of its consistent grain. Chicken and Turkey breasts make for even lower fat jerky snacks. Deer, rabbit, and other wild game meats are great for jerky making, too! Just make sure the meat has been handled properly.

Jerky meat should always be cut with the grain, otherwise it will crumble and fall apart when you cook it. Beef and Deer meat should be cut into ј inch thick strips about 1 inch wide. If you are making jerky from poultry, slice it thinner (about 3/8 inch). Be careful! If the meat's too thin or too thick it won't cook evenly! Season your meat strips with your favorite seasonings and recipes – many of the steak and chicken marinades already on the grocery store shelves work wonderfully for jerky as well. When we’re in a position of authority or expertise—as coaches, teachers, parents, or administrators—it becomes very easy to make judgments about the futures of people with whom we are helping. Heck, we’ve spent our life’s work studying our own particular area of performance, whether it’s hockey or physics, golf or English literature. And our tutorees are asking for our “expert” advice. The last thing we want to do is let them down. Being humane, kind-hearted souls who have chosen a “helping” profession, we want to protect our prodigies from harm, protect them from painful heartbreak. And we want to see them succeed.

So we try to paint a picture of “reality” that demonstrates the hard work necessary to make it and urges one to strive for something “attainable”. Besides, we naturally love young men and women who show above average work ethic. And that seems to take over as our unwritten definition of success. We’d rather see someone go for a high probability job and make it, regardless of the limited fulfillment that inherently goes along with an easy path and mediocrity, especially if we work with the underprivileged or disabled. If these folks get to middle class, often it is quite a success story, at least to those of us who got here easily.

Look at it this way: if your mission is to win at basketball you can “make it” with no problem. Just go out and play 6 year olds all the time. You’ll dominate, I guarantee. But, you probably won’t have much of a challenge. If you want to be happy and fulfilled, though, your mission should be to find out how far you can take your talent and who the most skilled players are that you can beat. A whole different journey—one that will bring you a great number of failures, but one that will be very rewarding. You’ll be able to sleep well every night knowing you gave it all you had that day, and you’ll be able to retire with a feeling of completeness. Something you’d much rather have than retiring with a lot of wondering “what ifs”.

The point is, if you’re in a position to advise, influence, and even direct the future of people, you have a duty to believe in them. Very simply, don’t assume you know what is best for them. Let them tell you, and then get totally juiced about helping them chase whatever it is they want. Your job as an “expert” is to teach them how to love tackling failure, not how to prevent or avoid it. They need to feel from their mentor or support system a confidence that there are no impossibilities, only possibilities.

All in all, I’m pretty happy with how 2005 turned out. My business is taking off. I’ve
built a solid foundation to support even more growth (which I forecast for 2006) and
I’ve even managed to take some time off.

I’d like other entrepreneurs and business owners to feel as good about their
business as I do about mine, so I thought I’d take a moment to share 5 things I
attribute to my successful 2005.

1. Attended seminars. This one is HUGE. Nothing beats getting out of your office
and away from your computer and actually meeting people face to face. I’ve come
away from these events with clients, joint venture partners, and more. (And that
doesn’t even include the great information I absorbed and was able to put to use in
both my business and my clients’ businesses.) If you only put one of my 5 tips to
use, this would be the one to do — that’s how valuable I’ve discovered attending
seminars to be.

2. Hired a coach. Again, this was another tough decision to make, but I’m really glad
I did. It’s difficult to see your business objectively, so having a neutral observer on
your team is extremely valuable. Coaches help you get out of your own way (and
believe me, that’s

3. Started systemizing my business. Unless you want to be chained to your business
night and day, you have got to start systemizing your business. Yes, all businesses
should have systems in place, even if you don’t have anyone else working for you
and you primarily sell services. The best part is when you do have systems in place,
your business suddenly starts running a lot more efficiently and effectively (and you
can start sleeping better at night and relaxing on vacation).

4. Outsourced. For all you control freaks out there, this one is for you. If you don’t
start hiring some help, I guarantee you’ll never be able to grow your business
because you’ll be constantly doing tasks you have no business doing. Do yourself a
favor and get some help…NOW. I’ve just hired a project manager/director of client
services, plus I have 2 backup writers and 2 virtual assistants. Building a team has
been a big stress reliever for me.

5. Focused on my inner game. Shifting my mindset away from “freelancer” to
“business owner” was another big piece of the puzzle. As soon as I made that shift,
all the other four techniques fell into place because it suddenly made them easier to
do.

It’s tough to change your inner game on your own — hiring a coach is probably the
fastest way to do this. But there are some good resources out there if you want to
begin dabbling in it first. Do a search and see what comes up, I started my journey
with free ezines and articles.

Creativity Exercise — Make 2006 the best year ever

Go back and reread my list. Now get out a piece of paper and start brainstorming
ways you can integrate my tips into your business. Which one do you think will bring
the quickest results? Which one will be more difficult for you to start doing? Which is
the one you SHOULD be doing?

Have fun with this exercise, really play around and see what comes up. Don’t censor
yourself, just write down the answers that bubble up even if it doesn’t seem right.
You might discover something important about yourself and your business that
might be the key to launching you forward faster than you ever dreamed possible.

There are so many themes a teenager can use on a bulletin board. Both of my kids collected quotes at one point. With multiple bulletin boards, teens can have a bulletin board with love quotes, a bulletin board with motivational quotes and even a bulletin board of quotes made by famous people.

Both of my kids also collected CD covers. How fun to put all of the CD covers on a bulletin board. When friends come over, the friends can see the CD covers and say "hey let's listen to this", referring to one of the CD covers.

ke many webmasters make when they develop their website. I can't begin to tell you how many websites I've seen that may only have a couple paragraphs of what I call useful content, and the rest being advertisements, sales pitches, links, banners, etc.

If you are going to take the time to develop and invest in a website, you need to focus on providing your viewers with informative information. Search engines favor sites that have useful content, not to mention you will capture a stronger interest from your viewers.

Page Size

Try to keep each of your pages no more than four pages in length. The reasons for this is that no one likes to spend a lot of the time scrolling just to read the entire content. If you have a lot of content, break it into separate pages. You can put in a link of "continue", "next", or "go to page #" at the bottom of each page.

Navigation Links

Nothing can be more frustrating than trying to figure out how to maneuver around ones website. Most any person (including myself) will leave a website as fast as they came in if they find it difficult to get from page to page.

Make it easy for your viewers to navigate around your website by putting navigation links on all of your pages. It is advised that all navigation links follow the same pattern on each page so as not to confuse your viewer. Setting your navigation links on the either side and also on the top or bottom is highly recommended.

Page Load Time

Did you ever click on a link to a website and found you had to wait 20 seconds or longer for the website to open? I don't know about you, but if I have to wait too long for a website to open, I will click off of it and go to another website.

This problem is caused by a Webmaster having too many graphics or animations on their website. Large graphics and animations will definitely slow the load time to your website. Keep in mind the majority of Internet users are still using dial-up for their Internet connection, so the time it takes for a website to open with a lot of graphics, can seem like eternity to them.

To avoid this problem do not use too many graphics on your website and try to resize the ones you want to keep. The ideal is to set your pages to load within ten seconds to avoid losing visitors.

Setting The Right Resolution

Setting the right resolution when creating your web pages can save you from visitors leaving your site rather quickly. The most important thing to understand is that the majority of all PC's are set at a 800 x 600 resolution. The problem here is, if a internet user with these settings goes on a website that was created with a higher resolution, the user will end up scrolling left to right in order to view all of the web page.

Even though there are ways around this by implementing tables into your web page, you are better off creating all your web pages so they can be viewed on PC's with a lower resolution.

Contact Information

If you don't have a link that is accessible to a contacts page, most people will not purchase anything from you.

It is highly recommended to place links that are plainly visible on all of your web pages that go to a separate contacts page. This page should give your viewers a way to contact you with any questions, concerns or comments. This helps ensure support and trust in doing business with you.

Pop Ups

This can be the most annoying feature a website can have in my opinion. Pop ups are used to get the viewers attention to either sign up for something or purchase their products. Although I understand the basis to pop ups and what they are meant to achieve, I feel there are other ways to capture your visitors attention that should get you the same results.

The most effective way to capture your visitors interest is having solid content on your website with informative information, as mentioned earlier. With that being said, you can implement title links in between some of your paragraphs, which can take your visitors to separate pages on “special promotions”, “newsletters” or “products”. On these pages, you can list the same message you would have in your pop up. This is far more acceptable since the viewer is making the choice to click on the link.

If you feel your website needs to use pop ups, use a pop under instead. This form of pop up only comes up when a person leaves your website and is far less annoying.

Site Map

A site map is a separate page that list a complete directory to your entire website. You can relate to it like what a table of contents is to a book. Having a site map on your website helps the viewer maneuver through your site without confusion or second-guessing where to find something. Most search engines favor sites with site maps, which in turn will improve your search rankings, as well as placement.

Privacy Policy

With the ever increasing problems with Spam on the Internet, a privacy policy is a crucial element to your website. You are letting your viewers know that any information they supply you with, is held in the strictest confidence and that you will not share this information with any other third party. You are instilling trust to all who do business with you.

Update Your Site Often

This is a valid step you want to take seriously. Updating your site with new content gives your viewers a reason to revisit your website. Search engines love sites that update their site often, which will definitely increase your search engine rankings.

It can be an added benefit to add a section on your home page that tells your viewers when your site was last updated, the type of changes that were made and a link to each update.

Updating your site once a week or every other week should work very well for you.

So you set your goals and now you need to implement them. To do this we need to organize a way of cross checking those goals to make sure you are on track.

Have an outline. Allow for deviations. Do not be too r

idged. Keep your destination in mind. Do this by writing it down, allow for events pushing you of course, then correct it based on the information you have been given.

So what I do, is set daily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals, quarterly goals, yearly goals then three and five year goals. Each set of goals cross check the others.

The daily goals work towards the weekly goals, the weekly goals work towards the monthly goals, the monthly goals work towards the quarterly goals; I think you see what I mean.

So I just focus on the daily goals, on Monday's I review the previous week and then adjust for next week's goals and adjust accordingly for the daily goals and this goes on and on. The final destination is always in mind. This is written down.

Life is not fixed; things will happen from week to week knocking you off course, however because you are re-adjusting you will get to your final destination. Each time you are knocked of course you are given information which helps you to re-evaluate your situation. This information supplies you with the ingredients for success.

It’s probably safe to assume that if you are writing a book, you have an affinity for the topic and audience. Whoever your target audience is, you must ask yourself:

* Where are they most likely to be when they are online?

* What web sites do they visit?

* What discussion boards do they frequent?

* What support/social groups do they belong to?

Asking each of these questions will be useful when developing your marketing plan.

Finding your target audience can be as simple as searching for keywords and phrases on the Internet or as detailed as doing research offline at the library. Either way, here are a few ways to make the process easier for you to determine if a market exists for your book idea.

Finding Your Audience Online

The Internet has become THE place go for information on any and everything. If your target audience exists, you’ll

find them there. The best place to locate your target audience is on bulletin boards, forums, and newsgroups. This is where groups of people come together to share ideas and stories, or to ask questions on a particular topic.

To quickly find your target audience online go to any search engine like Google and type in the keyword your target audience is most likely to use and add the word forum to the end. For example type “web design forum” and you will get a listing of web sites that have some type of forum that discusses web site design. For better search results put quotes around the keywords you’re searching for and the results that come back will be even more relevant to what you’re looking for.

Here are a few combinations you can use (replace keyword with terms used by your target audience):

Visit these places and find out what people are talking about. You will surely determine what to write about when you walk in the footsteps of your target audience.

First, understand that an avalanche is unpredictable, but there are certain conditions that can make an avalanche more likely to occur. A long period of cold and clear weather can weaken the snowpack. This can set up a situation where an avalanche is easily triggered.

It is hard to get a sense of the layering of the snowpack, but you can begin to “feel” the consistency of the snow. When there is stiffness or a styro-foam texture of the snowcover are significant. Sounds can be your biggest clue. Listen for hollow sounds, cracking, or collapsing sounds around you. Get a feel for snow stability and when you're unsure, try to stick to flatter and more open terrain. Consider the snowpack before crossing under a place where an avalanche may be a risk. Look for an alternative route.

There are even courses taught by avalanche professionals to lessen the probability that you may get caught in one. There are new probes available as safety tools, and high-tech beacons, which can send distress signals, these are handy to have—but do very little good if you don't have a shovel as well.
